Cleaning your washing machine is important. That’s why as part of our interior checklist, we run the washing machine on each visit. On occasion, we are greeted with a moldy smell when opening the door of front-loading clothes washers. This is usually the result of the homeowner leaving the washer door closed between loads. This is a problem because the ultra-tight seal on the front loader doors doesn’t let the interior dry between washings. This often allows mold to grow inside the washer. And because front loaders use less water than top loaders (which fill up almost to the top), they don’t always wash away the mold when you run a load of laundry.
Luckily eliminating the mold is easy. Just run the empty washer through a cycle once a month with a mold cleaner designed for front loaders. We recommend the affordable and easy-to-get OxiCLean Washing Machine Cleaner. If you don’t want to use the tablets, you can substitute a cup of bleach.
In the future, mold can be prevented by treating the washer monthly and keeping the door open between washings allowing the interior can dry out. If you have a top-load washer, use the techniques mentioned above to remove bad odors.
